We know the power of words. Words—even false words, spoken mostly by politicians and demagogues -- can let loose the dogs of wars, death, terror and destruction; they can bring life, peace, happiness and joy. But when these words are uttered repeatedly or chanted with deep sincerity, faith, intense focus and concentration coupled with will-power, they become a prayer, an incantation or a spell.
They acquire magical powers.

They can change the events, situations and the hearts of the people. It is a kind of telekinesis or psychokinesis. Prayers spoken out with deep faith and strong will can move the hearts of gods. They can move mountains.
Witches believe that all the elements and creations of Nature are an integral part of a universal energy. Therefore, all the animate and inanimate objects of nature including animals, plants, herbs, spices, clothes, stones, rocks, water, air, earth, sky and fire are imbibed with specific energies.
When witches cast their spells they combine their own energies expressed through the prayers with the energies of the elements of Nature such as incense, flowers, herbs, oils and similar things. They draw other symbols like circles to further reinforce their energies. All these acts are called rituals.

A prayer combined with a ritual becomes a spell which has a magical effect on the object, person, event or a situation. Witchcraft spells can be used both for evil and good intentions. A spell cast with evil intentions is called a hex. Witchcraft prohibits the use of hexes. According to Wiccan Rede

Bide the Wiccan Law ye must,

Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfill:
An ye harm none, do as ye will.
And ever mind the Rule of Three:
What ye send out, comes back to thee.
Follow this with mind and heart,
And merry ye meet, and merry ye part.
In short, if you sow wind you will reap whirlwind.

When the process of spell casting ends, the witches or the psychics clean up the ground of any remnant of energy. This is normally done by using ‘cakes and wine’ ritual followed by uttering the words of gratitude to the deities, gods and other elements of Nature and banishing the circle.
